The Imagine School Program in Bangladesh

2025-2026

For the second year running, the Le Projet Imagine has rolled out its Civic Engagement Programme in primary schools in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in partnership withĀ We Act For KidsĀ Action Fund.

A programme builds on previous work

The programme was rolled out inĀ three Grameen Shikkha IDKIDS schools, located in neighbourhoods facing significant social and environmental challenges. The pupils, aged between 9 and 12, were divided into groups, each supervised by a teacher.

As in the previous year, the decision was made to work with the Inspiration kit ā€˜Self-awareness and Cooperation’, which the local teaching teams had fully embraced. This helped to gain new teaching skills, avoid educational overload and further embed the programme’s participatory approach among the pupils.

Projects fixed in children’s everyday lives

The process takes place in two phases: prior to the main activity, the initial ā€˜inspiration/exploration’ phases identified four key themes that are close to the hearts of the children and their community.

At the very heart of the educational approach of Le Projet Imagine lies the idea that projects are not imposed; they are chosen by the children.

Following the collective development process,Ā three projects were successfully launched, each led by a school:

  • Raising awareness of road safety
  • Raising awareness of cleanliness and hygiene in relation to the use of toilet facilities
  • Raising awareness of the environment and waste management, particularly through initiatives such as World Cleanup Day. This type of event plays a key role – it enables both a gradual scaling up of projects and strong institutional recognition of the children’s work which are valued beyond their immediate community.Ā

Beyond the pupils involved, the programme’s impact extended far beyond the neighbourhoods concerned: each community comprises around 1,000 households, meaning approximately 3,000 households have been indirectly affected. The pupils also organised awareness-raising activities in slums and market areas, reaching a further 1,500 people. Le Projet Imagine has therefore reached nearly 4,500 people, combining local initiatives, community engagement and the dissemination of prevention messages.

Each classroom thus becomes a space where pupils gain practical experience of their ability to take action, cooperate and transform their immediate environment for the benefit of the wider community.

2023-2024

On April 26, 2024, more than one hundred children from three classes in a Dhaka slum received their “Civic Engagement Diploma” during a celebration that was both joyful and deeply meaningful. For the past year, these students had been participating in the Imagine School Program launched in Bangladesh in partnership with the “We Act For Kids” Endowment Fund.*

This initiative enabled the children to become involved, both individually and collectively, in three sustainable development projects. They chose to work on crucial themes aimed at improving their own living conditions and those of their entire community:

  • Cleaning the classroom and its surroundings and raising neighborhood awareness about waste sorting to prevent the spread of pests (fleas, mosquitoes, etc.). This student-led initiative snowballed, inspiring adults to get involved in this massive hygiene drive.

  • šŸ’§NO WATER – NO LIFE: Under this banner, the school children ran a major awareness campaign on water sanitation. Armed with signs, they reached out to local residents to inform them about the importance of clean drinking water, showing them how to use water purification tablets to better manage this vital resource.
  • The fight against forced marriage of young girls:While Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage in South Asia, the final class chose to perform a play to reach a wide audience. A young bride from the community even visited their classroom to share her testimony—a deeply moving moment.
  • The We Act For Kids Endowment Fund works to support the world’s most vulnerable children and foster a spirit of generosity. It mobilizes numerous stakeholders around the WE ACT FOR KIDS commitment, through innovative and sustainable initiatives that protect children’s rights and respect their environment.
