What About the Sustainable Development Goals After 2030 ?
As the international community enters the final phase of implementing the 2030 Agenda, the representatives ofĀ Ā Le Projet ImagineĀ at the United Nations in New York,Ā Elena Cusmir and Andrea Fage, participated in key events held as part of the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.
This year’s HLPF placed particular emphasis on accelerating practical action, strengthening partnerships, and fostering coordinated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Consistent with Le Projet Imagine’s mission and longstanding engagement with the United Nations,Ā the NGOās representatives focused on themes closely aligned with the organization’s priorities, including:
- quality education (SDG 4);
- childrenās rights and youth engagement;
- gender equality (SDG 5);peaceful, just and inclusive societies (SDG 16);
- partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17) and strengthening multilateral cooperation through meaningful civil society engagement.
Ā Among our priorities :
- implementation of theĀ Pact for the Future;
- theĀ UN80 initiativeĀ andĀ the renewal of multilateral cooperation;
- the role of civil society in global governance;
- education as a catalyst forĀ sustainable development;
- youth participation in public decision-making;
- childrenās rights and human dignity;
- the development of innovative partnershipsĀ to accelerate implementation of the SDGs; and practical approaches to monitoring progressĀ and measuring the impactĀ in the lead-up to 2030.
Focus on Education Beyond the 2030 Agenda: The Need for Systemic Transformation
In addition to attending official HLPF sessions and side events, our NGOās representatives at the United Nations in New York participated in several virtual events and stakeholder discussions throughout the Forum, contributing to LPIās ongoing engagement within the UN system. These events brought together representatives from governments, academia, international organizations, and civil society to take stock of the future of education.
The meetings provided an opportunity to reflect on the future of education beyond 2030. Discussions focused in particular on the evolution of education systems,Ā education as a global public good, the right to quality education and the need for a new social contract based on solidarity, equity, and cooperation.
Transformative Education: Pathways to Justice and Peace Led by Young People
The discussions highlighted the close interconnection betweenĀ SDGs 4 (quality education),Ā 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions)Ā and 17Ā (partnerships),while emphasizing the essential role of meaningful youth participation in achieving long-term sustainable developmentĀ and advancingĀ transformative education.Ā This concept, proposed by UNESCO as part of its call for a new social contract for education in 2021, involves āteaching and learning designed to motivate and empower learners, ensuring they are happy and healthy, so that they can make informed decisions and take action at individual, community, and global levels.ā Our NGO is fully aligned with this vision, which it has been putting into practice since 2017 through its first Civic Engagement school Programs.
This event provided aĀ great opportunity to reconnect with representatives of theĀ Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies coalition. Hosted by the Center onĀ International Cooperation (CIC), New York University,Ā the event opened promising avenues for future dialogue.
Representatives of Pathfinders recalled their participation in theĀ Normandy World Peace Forum,Ā of whichĀ Le Projet ImagineĀ has been a partner since its inception : they expressed their appreciation for both the quality of the organization’s engagement and the outcomes of the Forum.Ā
These conversations reinforced existing connections established through the Normandy World Peace Forum and may provide a foundation for future collaboration around education, peacebuilding, partnerships, and inclusive governance.
Looking Forward
HLPF 2026 reaffirmed the increasingly important contribution of civil society organizations in translating global commitments into practical action.
Through its representation at United Nations Headquarters in New York,Ā Le Projet ImagineĀ continues to contribute constructively to international dialogue, strengthen partnerships across the United Nations and civil society communities, and identify opportunities for collaboration that advanceĀ education, youth engagement, human dignity, and sustainable development in line with the organization’s mission and values.
